Quotes and Notes from the books I read (Part 2)

Every other book I read of APJ Abdul Kalam is full of inspiration. His life keeps on inspiring the students across India.  These following pearls of wisdom are taken from various books written by APJ Abdul Kalam. Get Inspired! Dream big! Strive to achieve it!!

  • Adversity always presents opportunities for introspection- (Turning Points)
  • There is a divine power that takes over us, that gently lifts us from sadness, failures and miseries. If we open our mind and let it, it will guide us to our true place. Release yourself from the building that limit you and let that power overtake your mind, and that’s when you will be on the road to the true happiness and peace.- Jainulabdeen Kalam
  • Science is an open ended and exploratory, that it sets out to find answer like traveler goes on voyage. It is, in fact a voyage into all that is possible. Science is a joy passion.
  • Development on the other hand is a closed loop. It takes work done by scientists and move it a step further. It does not allow for mistake and exploration. In fact, it uses mistakes for making modifications and up gradation.
  • Total commitment is not just hard work, it is total involvement. It is also about setting goal. It is having a goal in front of you that make difference to the final outcome of your hard work.
  • True quality in teaching does not come from a great building or great facilities or great advertisement. It happens when education is imparted with love by great teachers.
  • Unless one has tasted bitter pill of failure, one cannot aspire enough for success.
  • Accept your destiny and go ahead with your life, you are not destined to become air pilot what you desired to become is not revealed now but it is predetermined. Forget this failure, as it was essential to lead you to your destined path. Search instead, for true purpose of your existence
  • Think of rising higher; let it be your thoughts. Even if your object be not attained, the thought itself will have raised you.
  • See the flower, how generously it distributes perfume and honey. When its work is done, it falls away quietly. Try to be like flower, unassuming despite all its quality
  • I have understood now that after the feelings of disappointment subsides and one gains perspective, these experiences can change way of thinking, they also deeply impact our souls, I believe, and bring us face to face with existential issues. When that happens, we need to embrace the events and analyse how we responded, did we allow them merely roll over us like wave, or did we dive deeper into the matter and use it to gain insight into ourselves.
  • Needless to say, it is usually events of great magnitude that shifts something within us at fundamental level. When we are unable to live upto the high standards and expectation of those we value most , or get involved in matters that impact the lives of millions or when it is a matter of life and death these are the times when our senses of self and our ego witness deep change.
  • Life has taught me the best way to win is not to covet the win too much, instead to keep calm and open minds to new challenges.
  • For this post last one by Mark Twain: Man who does not read good books has no advantage over the man who can’t read them

Quotes and Notes from the books I read (Part 1)

Remembering Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam

Most of the following notes are from the book "Wings of Fire" by Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam.

1. He used to say that a good student could learn more from bad teacher than a poor student from even a skilled teacher.
(Here 'He' is referred to one of the teachers of APJ Abdul Kalam sir)

2. To succeed in life and archive result, you must understand and master three mighty forces - desire, belief and expectation.
-Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam

3. With faith you can change your destiny
-Iyadurai Solomon( wings of fire )

4. One must the understand difference between communication and conversations
-Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam

5. We just don't build on the successes, we also build on our failures.
- Von Braun (father of modern rocketry)

6. Pursuit of science is a combination of great elation and great despair.
-Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam

7.  Things that hurt instruct
- Benjamin Franklin

8. APJ Abdul Kalam Sir on failure of slv3-
It is like climbing mountains to reach the peak without experiencing its slides. Slides of mountains sustain life, not the peak, this is where things grow, experience is gained, and technologies are mastered. The importance of the peak lies only in the fact that it defines the slides. So I went towards the top always experiencing the slide.

9. APJ Abdul Kalam Sir wasn't in suitable attire to meet PM Indira Gandhi,  Dr. Dhawan said, "Don't worry you are beautifully clothed in your success".

10. PM asked sir to speak about the success of slv3 in a meeting of parliamentary panel of science and technology ...sir had to speak extempore and he said " I am indeed honored to be in this great gathering of nation builders. I only know how to build rocket system in our country, which would inject a satellite, built in our country, by imparting to it a velocity of 25,000km/hr"

11."What you imagine, is what will transpire. What you believe is what you will achieve."
-R. Venkataraman (Defense Minister 1983)

12. APJ Abdul Kalam Sir once said, "Ironically all through school we are taught to read, write, speak but not to listen."

13. "God can do tremendous things through a person who doesn't care about who gets the credit. The ego involvement must go."
- Robert Schuller.

14. "Before the God trusts you with success, you have to be humble enough to handle the big prize."
-Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam

15. APJ Abdul Kalam Sir was project director at DRDO working on integrated missile development program. Number of junior scientists were hired for the program but it was hard to work on missile since it was the first time. One of the junior scientists asked sir -APJ, "we don't have big shot in our team how could we work..??" Sir said, "Big shot is a little shot who keeps on shooting, so keep trying.!!"

16. For successful outcome
Goal setting, positive thinking, visualizing, and believing is must.

17.Through difficulties and problem god gives us opportunities to grow. So when your hopes and dreams are dashed, search among the wreckage, you will find a golden opportunity hidden in the ruins.

18. Great dreams of great dreamer always transcended.
-Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam

19. Best way to do it, is to do it.!!

20. Be more dedicated to make solid achievement than running after a swift but synthetic happiness.
-Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam

21. Biggest problem Indian youth faced was lack of clarity of vision, a lack of direction.
-Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam

22. World will never again directed by muscle or money power, in fact both these power depend upon technological excellence.
-Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam

23. The culture of working only for material possessions and reward must be discarded.
-Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam

24. Your willingness to use your own inner resources to invest in your life, especially your imagination, will bring you success. When you address a task from your own uniquely individual standpoint, you become a whole person.
-Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam

25. Above all things reverence yourself
-Pythagoras

26. Be so busy improving yourself that you have no time to criticize other.
-Chetan Bhagat (From his book 'What young India wants')

27. Life is an exam where syllabus is unknown and question paper is not set, nor are there modal answer papers.

Application of Measurement System

Application of Measuring Instruments/System
The instrument and measuring systems are employed for following functions.
1.      Monitoring of process and operation.
2.      Control of process and operation.
3.      Experimental Engineering Analysis.
1. Monitoring of process and operation.
In these types of measuring instruments simply indicate the value or condition of parameter under study and do not serve any control function.
Example:
 1. Water and energy meters installed in homes.
2. An ammeter and voltmeter indicates the value of current or voltage being monitored at a particular instant.
2. Control of process and operation:
There is strong association between measurements and control. The instrument find very useful application in automatic control system.
Example:
1.      A common example is the typical refrigeration system which employs a thermostatic control. A temperature measuring device (often by metallic element) senses the room temperature, thus providing the information necessary for proper functioning of the control system.
3. Experimental Engineering Analysis:
The engineering problem can be solved by theoretical as well as experimental methods; several applications require the use of the methods.
Following are the uses of experimental engineering analysis:
i.                    To determine system parameters, variable and performance indices.
ii.                  To formulate the generalized empirical relationship in cases where there is no proper theoretical backing.
iii.                To set the validity of theoretical predictions.

iv.                To solve mathematical relationship with the help of analogies.
